Inner Danish Waters Model Setup (2019–2022)

This FlexSem model setup covers the Inner Danish Waters and includes both hydrodynamics and biogeochemistry. It was run for the period 2019 to 2022 and features open boundaries to the North Sea in the north and the Baltic Sea in the east.

The horizontal resolution of the unstructured computational mesh ranges from 3.5 km in central Kattegat to 350 meters in the narrow strait of Lillebælt. The total model domain spans 66,359 km² with a mean depth of 26.6 meters. The mesh consists of 10,967 polygons and 33 vertical layers, with layer thicknesses varying from 1.0 to 10.0 meters, resulting in a total of 176,128 computational cells.

Open boundary conditions include water level, currents, temperature, and salinity, all interpolated from Copernicus CMEMS model output. Surface forcing is provided by meteorological data from WRF version 3, supplied by the Department of Environmental Science at Aarhus University. The model also incorporates 88 freshwater sources, with runoff data obtained from the Danish QNP and Swedish E-HYPE models.
